TEENAGE DICK

Tuesday, June 12

Teenage Dick was commissioned and developed by Apothetae, a company dedicated to plays that explore and illuminate the "Disabled Experience."A brilliantly hilarious take on Richard III, Shakespeare’s classic tale of power lust, TEENAGE DICK reimagines the most famous disabled character of all time as a 16-year-old outsider in the deepest winter of his discontent: his junior year at Roseland High. Picked on because of his cerebral palsy (as well as his sometimes creepy Shakespearean way of speaking), Richard is determined to have his revenge and make his name by becoming president of the senior class. But as he manipulates and crushes the obstacles to his electoral success, Richard finds himself faced with a decision he never expected would be his to make: is it better to be loved or feared?

FIRE IN DREAMLAND

Wednesday, June 20

On Coney Island, in the aftermath of 2012’s Superstorm Sandy, a disillusioned do-gooder named Kate meets Jaap Hooft, a charismatic European film-maker who sees in the devastation wrought by the storm an opportunity to make a work of art about another disaster that struck Coney Island some hundred years before: the 1911 fire that started in the amusement park known as Dreamland, burning it to ashes from which it never arose.

Public Shakespeare Talks: Slate’s Lend Me Your Ears LIVE – Coriolanus and the Death of Democracy

Wednesday, June 20

Join Isaac Butler, the host of Slate’s new Lend Me Your Ears podcast, Michael Sexton, the Director of the Public Shakespeare Initiative, and a panel of experts and artists for an exploration of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, the story of what happens when an ill-informed, easily manipulated populace elects the wrong man – and then un-elects him. Lend Me Your Ears is a new podcast from Slate that examines the ways Shakespeare’s plays can inform, illuminate, and interrogate our current political moment. The evening will also feature readings from Coriolanus.

TEENAGE DICK

TEENAGE DICK

Wednesday, June 20

Tony winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson (JitneyThe Piano Lesson) returns to Shakespeare in the Park to direct a sumptuous new production of OTHELLO. Set amid war and palace intrigue in the 17th-century Mediterranean, this classic drama about a noble Black Venetian general whose marriage is sabotaged by theater’s most infamous villain, Iago, remains Shakespeare’s most urgent and relevant tragedy today. A lush, romantic vision gives way to the violent tangle of love and jealousy, race and revenge in this must-see production of Shakespeare’s great tragedy, OTHELLO.
