Conceived jointly by recording artist Eli “Paperboy” Reed and the founder of Gospel For Teens, Vy Higgensen, The Harlem Gospel Travelers began in 2013 as an offshoot of that Harlem based music education program dedicated to the preservation and discussion of Gospel Quartet music. Once Reed, who taught the class, realized the talent and dedication the young men in the program had, what started as a purely educational endeavor quickly blossomed into a full-fledged performing group. After initial street performances on the corner of 125th St. and Frederick Douglass Blvd, The Travelers (so named because they all travel to Harlem from far-flung corners of the tri-state area to participate in the program) joined Reed on stage at Lincoln Center Outdoors in the summer of 2016 and generated such a buzz that the demand for more performances could not be denied. Performing original material as well as classics of the genre by legendary groups like The Soul Stirrers and Swanee Quintet, these young men (none over the age of 21) are a musical force to be reckoned with destined for greater things to come.
